Poop Shoot

Unless you have one of the conveyor systems everyone is faced with the removal of droppings.  The two keys to our easy cleaning lofts are Melamine perches and our "Poop Shoots".  Our compartments have at the long end poop shoots installed in the exterior walls.  When we scrape the droppings are scraped from the perches to the floor and the floors are scraped out the poop shoots.  It's that simple.

The poop shoot can be just about any size but needs to be wider than your scraper.  This one is 6 inches high and 48 inches wide.  The door is hinged on the out side so it swings open.  It's weighted so it wants to fall closed.  You can attach a latch of some kind if you need to keep cats and rodents from lifting the door and squeezing in.  When we scrape we just scrape everything out the poop shoot door.  The movement of the scraper pushes the door open, the droppings fall out the shoot into a container placed outside the loft under the shoot, and the weight of the door automatically closes it.  It's easy and simple and makes our cleaning tasks not quite so unpleasant.

This is the Poop Shoot in our Young Bird Loft.  It's at the opposite end of the loft from the door so we can scrape from the door end to the shoot.

This shot shows our 3 foot scraper scraping droppings out the shoot.  Notice how the scraper is pushing the door open.

This is an outside view of the poop shoot door, in the closed position.  The added 2X6 gives the door enough weight to close by it's self with out being to heavy.

This outside shot shows the door being pushed open by the scraper inside.
